16 & 17 Weeks - From avocado to turnip

How your baby's growing @ 17 weeks:
Your baby's skeleton is changing from soft cartilage to bone, and the umbilical cord — her lifeline to the placenta — is growing stronger and thicker. Your baby weighs 5 ounces now (about as much as a turnip), and she's around 5 inches long from head to bottom. She can move her joints, and her sweat glands are starting to develop.

He's adding fat stores that will keep him warm and cozy after he's born. Your baby's weight will increase approximately six times over the next four weeks. Your baby is hard at work honing his sucking and swallowing reflexes—all the better for eating that 2 AM (and 5 AM, and 8 AM ...) meal in a few months! The finger- and toenails are beginning to grow from their nail beds, which would explain why he'll need them trimmed almost as soon as he's born!

Your baby weighs nearly 5 ounces and is a little over 5 inches long—about the size of a baked potato (load on the butter and sour cream, please).

How your baby's growing @ 16 weeks:
Get ready for a growth spurt. In the next few weeks, your baby will double his weight and add inches to his length. Right now, he's about the size of an avocado: 4 1/2 inches long (head to rump) and 3 1/2 ounces. His legs are much more developed, his head is more erect than it has been, and his eyes have moved closer to the front of his head. His ears are close to their final position, too. The patterning of his scalp has begun, though his locks aren't recognizable yet. He's even started growing toenails. And there's a lot happening inside as well. For example, his heart is now pumping about 25 quarts of blood each day, and this amount will continue to increase as your baby continues to develop.

15 Weeks - Our Future Orangeman!!!!

Things have been continuing to go along just peachy :) I attempted to do some shopping at Old Navy yesterday, but I realized as I was pulling into the parking lot that I left my wallet at work. D'oh. I do think I'm getting to that point where I need more than one pair of maternity pants...

I went to Babies 'R us on Sunday with Clara and started working on a registry. It's still a work in progress - hence why if you check it out you'll see a couple different options for the same thing (if that makes any sense...) Need to figure out what one we'd really want. And will end up removing some items...And have a bunch more that I need to add.

Your Baby's Growth and Development:
Your baby is growing rapidly as always as you continue your pregnancy week by week journey. You would still be able to see your baby's blood vessels through his paper-thin skin if you were to peek inside your uterus during pregnancy week 15. In fact the vessels forming in your baby's body make him look rather like a map! This week your baby will start producing lanugo, which is fine hair that will cover your baby's body up until a few weeks before birth. Lanugo covers every part of your baby in utero, except for the palms, soles of the feet, lips, penis, nails and inner fingers and toes. Typically babies will shed this hair by the 8th month of pregnancy, but it can persist in some after birth for a short period of time. Pre-term babies are more likely to be born with lanugo than full term babies. Your baby might start sucking his thumb this week.

The bones in your baby's body are also starting to get harder during pregnancy at 15 weeks and will continue to do so throughout your pregnancy. Your baby is spending most of his time practicing breathing, by inhaling and exhaling amniotic fluid. Believe it or not, the very act of doing so will help your baby's air sacs develop during pregnancy. Your baby continues to form taste buds at this point in time.

Your baby is a about the size of an orange by pregnancy week 15, between 4 and 4 and ½ inches long and weighing more than 1 ½ ounces.

Monthly Check-up

Had a Doctor's appointment last night. Everything looks good! I actually gained a couple of pounds. The 1st two times I went I stayed exactly the same. Must mean the jelly bean is starting to grow! Blood pressure looked good - 120/72. The blood work that I had done at my 1st appointment was all fine - I'm B+. And I got to hear the heartbeat!!!! The DR. had no problems this time. It was a great sound to hear! He said it was beating around 150 bpm. And said everything looks great! I need to schedule an ultrasound to be done in 4 weeks.

14 Weeks - A little Lemon :)

It's that time again - time for the 14 week update...I can now officially say I'm into the 2nd trimester! And as you could tell by the pictures that I sent out last night - my stomach is starting to show that.

I finally told work the news - which went just fine! I even came back in on Monday to an article printed out on my chair about the swine flu + pregnant women.

And we're starting to make room for the little peanut. Again, from the pictures there no longer is a bed in our guestroom...Need to make room for a crib.

The little peanut made his way back up to Syracuse for homecoming weekend. And Mark is trying to use the 'We're pregnant' excuse...He was pretty hungover on Sunday after playing too much beer pong - and his excuse for that was "Well, we're pregnant, so I need to drink for two..." And then he decided he wanted to have Chinese food for dinner - and his reasoning for that was - "Well, we're pregnant - and I get cravings too..."

I head to the Doctor's tonight. Maybe today I'll be lucky and hear the heartbeat...

This week's big developments:
Your baby can now squint, frown, grimace, pee, and possibly suck his thumb! Thanks to brain impulses, his facial muscles are getting a workout as his tiny features form one expression after another. His kidneys are producing urine, which he releases into the amniotic fluid around him — a process he'll keep up until birth. He can grasp, too, and if you're having an ultrasound now, you may even catch him sucking his thumb.

In other news: Your baby's stretching out. From head to bottom, he measures 3 1/2 inches — about the size of a lemon — and he weighs 1 1/2 ounces. His body's growing faster than his head, which now sits upon a more distinct neck. By the end of this week, his arms will have grown to a length that's in proportion to the rest of his body. (His legs still have some lengthening to do.) He's starting to develop an ultra-fine, downy covering of hair, called lanugo, all over his body. Your baby's liver starts making bile this week — a sign that it's doing its job right — and his spleen starts helping in the production of red blood cells. Though you can't feel his tiny punches and kicks yet, your little pugilist's hands and feet (which now measure about 1/2 inch long) are more flexible and active.

Ewww - I'm not looking forward to this - "Meconium, that tar-like, sticky first baby poop, is now loading up your baby's intestines, which means you might want to set aside a bottle of olive oil, one of the few things that will get the gooey poop off of baby's bottom." I'll leave those diapers for Mark to change...

13 Weeks - A Nutter Butter

Here's my weekly update. The little peanut got to experience it's first plane ride this weekend!!! Which went well. And got to enjoy the weekend in Buffalo & Erie getting to see lots of family!

I've read a couple different things - that your 2nd trimester starts on the 13th week...and have also read that your 2nd trimester starts at the end of the 13th week. Come the end of this week I think I can officially say that I'm into my 2nd trimester. Man, where does time go? I'm sure I'll be saying that same thing when I'm 9 months and huge, and ready to have the baby....

And I finally told my boss at work yesterday. It went just fine. I was pretty nervous before telling him, my heart was pounding...but it went just fine. I almost kind of think they were already aware of it. But it's nice now I don't have to keep it a big secret anymore.

How your baby's growing:
Fingerprints have formed on your baby's tiny fingertips, her veins and organs are clearly visible through her still-thin skin, and her body is starting to catch up with her head — which makes up just a third of her body size now. If you're having a girl, she now has more than 2 million eggs in her ovaries. Your baby is almost 3 inches long (the size of a medium shrimp) and weighs nearly an ounce.

The sockets for all twenty teeth are formed in the gums, and vocal cords are beginning to form.

Your Baby
Your baby can make a fist and even suck his or her thumb this week—both skills that are über-cute during infancy ... and not so much at the age of 9. If you're really lucky, you might catch a glimpse of baby's thumb sucking on an ultrasound photo. That's a framer! Other exciting developments include:

Your baby's eyelids are fused shut to protect his eyes as they develop. His bones and skull are solidifying and soon itsy-bitsy ribs may appear. (Baby ribs! How cute is that?!) Baby's intestines are finally right where you want them—in his or her belly instead of poking out into the umbilical cord. Baby's tooth sockets are all loaded and ready to pop out baby teeth six or seven months after baby is born (causing baby a lot of pain and you a lot of lost sleep).

Who's that singing? Elton John? Could be your baby: His vocal cords and larynx are completed now.

Your baby-to-be now weighs about 20 grams and is nearly 3 inches long, or about the size of a Nutter Butter, covered in chocolate. OK, it doesn't have to be covered in chocolate, but isn't everything better that way?

12 Weeks along - now a lime!

Your Baby's Growth and Development

Your baby continues to grow and develop tremendously during pregnancy week 12. You'll be amazed at the pregnancy week by week changes that start occurring within your baby in the upcoming months. Your baby's genitals will start showing signs of being either male or female soon. During pregnancy week 12, your baby's brain is starting to make hormones, and nerve cells are multiplying at a rapid rate. Your baby may be sucking as early as this week, and your baby's kidneys may even be producing urine.

By pregnancy 12 weeks if you stimulate certain points of your uterus your baby may move in response, though you won't be able to actually feel your baby moving for another few weeks!

Meanwhile, nerve cells are multiplying rapidly, and in your baby's brain, synapses are forming furiously. His face looks unquestionably human: His eyes have moved from the sides to the front of his head, and his ears are right where they should be. From crown to rump, your baby-to-be is just over 2 inches long (about the size of a lime) and weighs half an ounce

Our 11 week fig...

The little one got to experience it's 2nd football game at Penn Sate (it still needs to see it's first victory!) And the little peanut was quite a party animal this weekend - staying out until after 1:00 both nights. It was pretty exhausting....And was very nice to be able to go to bed early on Sunday!

But things have still been going pretty well! I think I've escaped the nasty morning sickness! (Thank you mom for that one :) ) I'm still fitting in all my regular clothes. I'm waiting for the morning when I go to put on my jeans and they won't fit...

How your baby's growing:

Your baby, just over 1 1/2 inches long and about the size of a fig, or a large lime, is now almost fully formed. Her hands will soon open and close into fists, tiny tooth buds are beginning to appear under her gums, and some of her bones are beginning to harden.

She's already busy kicking and stretching, and her tiny movements are so effortless they look like water ballet. These movements will become more frequent as her body grows and becomes more developed and functional. You won't feel your baby's acrobatics for another month or two — nor will you notice the hiccupping that may be happening now that her diaphragm is forming.
This is the last week of the embryonic period. From now on, your baby will be called a fetus. Your baby's fingernails appear this week! External genitalia are beginning to show distinguishing features and the development of male or female will be complete in three weeks. The placenta's blood vessels increase to provide your baby with the nutrients and oxygen he needs for continued growth. Your baby's ears are gradually moving from the neck towards the sides of his head. Inside of your baby's abdomen, the intestines are developing. Because the intestines are so large, some of them project into the umbilical cord and they will return to the abdomen within the next week or two.

Monthly Doctor's Appointment

The appointment went well. I went in not knowing whether or not they'd do an ultrasound or listening for the heartbeat...The nurse told me that the DR would probably try to listen for the heartbeat. She said since I was skinny I might be able to hear it. The DR came in and we chatted for a bit, and then he tried to listen for the heartbeat...We were able to hear mine just fine! But no luck hearing the babies. He goes, well let me go get the machine and we'll look for it. I will admit i was a little worried when he left the room. But I guess I wasn't terribly worried since both the nurse & DR said I might be able to hear something. So he came back in with the ultrasound machine, and he had no problems at all seeing the little one. As soon as he did put the thing on my stomach the baby did jump a little bit, and seemed to be pretty active. Hence explaining why it was hard to get a heartbeat. It was pretty neat to see the head, and you could see the little heart beating on the screen as well!

I told my co-worker (Clara, she's the only one that knows about the baby right now...) that I got to see it, and she goes 'Let me see.' So appartenly I could've asked for a print out of the ultrasound, but I did not realize that. You'll all have to wait until next time to get your glimpse of the peanut. Being able to see the little one makes everything so much more real!! I'm super excited :):):)

10 Week Update - A kumquat!

Though he's barely the size of a kumquat — a little over an inch or so long, crown to bottom — and weighs less than a quarter of an ounce, your baby has now completed the most critical portion of his development. This is the beginning of the so-called fetal period, a time when the tissues and organs in his body rapidly grow and mature.

He's swallowing fluid and kicking up a storm. Vital organs — including his kidneys, intestines, brain, and liver (now making red blood cells in place of the disappearing yolk sac) — are in place and starting to function, though they'll continue to develop throughout your pregnancy.

If you could take a peek inside your womb, you'd spot minute details, like tiny nails forming on fingers and toes (no more webbing) and peach-fuzz hair beginning to grow on tender skin.

In other developments: Your baby's limbs can bend now. His hands are flexed at the wrist and meet over his heart, and his feet may be long enough to meet in front of his body. The outline of his spine is clearly visible through translucent skin, and spinal nerves are beginning to stretch out from his spinal cord. Your baby's forehead temporarily bulges with his developing brain and sits very high on his head, which measures half the length of his body. From crown to rump, he's about 1 1/4 inches long. In the coming weeks, your baby will again double in size — to nearly 3 inches.

Week 8 - Now a raspberry!

8 Week yesterday! (Although Mark thinks I'm only 6 weeks - guess he doesn't grasp the fact that you're not really pregnant the 1st 2 weeks of your so called pregnancy...(Which I must admit, I never knew that myself...) I made it through the 1st 2 months...Only 223 days to go...Unless the little one wants to stay put for a little while longer. This week the little peanut is the size of a raspberry...and is starting to look more baby like! So far I've been feeling pretty good. I do get really hungry - and start to feel a little crappy if I don't eat something - so I'm working on more small meals/snacks throughout the day.

How Big is the Baby at Eight Weeks Pregnant?

Think bean! By pregnancy week 8 your baby is anywhere from 14 to 20mm long, or about the size of a Lima bean! Many women in fact continue to refer to their baby as their little 'bean' as they follow their pregnancy week by week. Though it is hard to believe your little bean will one day grow into a full size baby!

Your Baby's Growth and Development

Your baby is doing a lot of growing during pregnancy 8 weeks. Up until this point in time your baby had a small tail... that starts to disappear this week, and your little one will soon have eyelids to cover their blossoming eyes. While the arms and legs are also lengthening, the fingers and toes are likely to still be webbed. Your baby's brain is also maturing during pregnancy week 8, as nerve cells begin to connect with one another, forming the groundwork for communication later in life. Did you know the tip of your baby's nose is even formed by pregnancy 8 weeks? The lungs are also working hard at maturing by pregnancy week 8, though they won't be fully mature until near term. However, tubes leading from your baby's throat to the lungs begin to form branches.

Week 7 - Our little blueberry

This week the little one is the size of a big blueberry...Growing from the little pea it was last week. A lot is happening this week - mouth, tongue, fully formed eyes, teeth!!!!

3 weeks + 1 day until I go back to the DR...Maybe I'll get a glimpse of the blueberry at that appointment...Heck by then it'll be a size of a lime...

How Big is the Baby at Seven Weeks Pregnant?

During pregnancy week 7 your baby will grow tremendously, up to 13 mm in length! Your baby is much closer to the size of a large blueberry or small grape by 7 weeks pregnant than a pea.

Your Baby's Growth and Development

At 7 weeks pregnant facial features become more prominent in your newborn. Upon close investigation you may be able to discern a mouth and even a tongue (you actually can't see the tongue, but it is forming inside your baby!). During pregnancy week 7 your baby's eyes will also start to become more fully formed, and now have a retina and lens attached. The major muscle systems in the body also continue to develop during pregnancy week 7, and your baby begins to produce his own blood type. Your baby's movements will be uncoordinated at best at this point during pregnancy, but rest assured your little one is squirming about his new home. If you were to look directly at your baby you would still be able to see slight webbing in the fingers and toes during pregnancy 7 weeks. Teeth are also starting to form on the inside of your baby's mouth, and thin veins start to peer out from beneath your baby's skin. Your baby's intestines and appendix should be formed by now. By this time your baby's liver is working diligently to start producing red blood cells. Your baby should be bouncing right along in his comfy and warm home!

Week 6 - Our sweet pea(nut)

Our little sweet pea(nut) is 6.5 weeks now. It's little eyes and nose is now starting to form. So far I've been feeling pretty good! I get brief spells during the day that last 20-30 mintues where I feel crappy - but so far no getting sick. Let's hope it stays that way!

How Big is the Baby at Six Weeks Pregnant?
Your baby is growing! During pregnancy week 6 your physician will measure your baby with ultrasound, in increments referred to as "crown-rump length" which is basically the distance from the top of your baby's head to his buttocks. Your baby at 6 weeks may be anywhere from 2 to 5mm long at this point in time or roughly the size of half a baby pea. Not very big, but bigger than last week!

Your Baby's Growth and Development
Your baby is starting to look more and more like a little organic (albeit not quite human) being during pregnancy week 6. Dark spots should be forming where the eyes and nostrils will eventually take shape. There should also be small pits on the sides of the head where the ears will develop, and tiny buds that will form into the arms and legs at roughly 6 weeks pregnant. For several weeks the hands and feet will be connected by a layer of webbing between the fingers and toes. Your baby will start responding to sensory input and start moving all on his own in these next few weeks.

At 6 weeks of pregnancy the heart should now be beating at about 100 to 140 beats per minute and blood will start circulating throughout your baby's body. Your healthcare practitioner may be able to see the beating of the heartbeat during pregnancy week 6 using ultrasound, though it may still be a few weeks before the heartbeat is detectable via a Doppler device.

Did you know that your baby would actually be able to display reflexes in response to touch even by pregnancy 6 weeks? This is because the central nervous system is already developing and linking the muscles in the body with the limbs. You'll learn even more amazing facts as you follow your pregnancy week by week.

Thursday, August 6, 2009

Week 5 - A little seasame seed

How Big is the Baby at Five Weeks Pregnant?
Pregnancy week 5 isn't much different from pregnancy week 4. During 5 weeks pregnant your baby is still just over a millimeter long. You might say that your baby is about the size of a small grain of rice! However your baby is growing in many other ways. Vital organs continue to develop through this week.

Your Baby's Growth and Development
During the early part of this pregnancy at 5 weeks the central nervous system, muscles, bones and even the heart will begin to form. Early skeletal development is also possible at or around pregnancy week 5. Remember that every person is unique, thus their baby will develop at a different rate from others.

Perhaps the most interesting changes that are occurring during 5 weeks pregnant include those happening in the heart. During this week the heart will begin to divide into separate chambers and start pumping blood. The heart is formed from the middle layer of cells called the mesoderm. Other organs that will develop from this layer include the muscles, cartilage and bone. The primitive placenta and umbilical cord are also developing. The neural tube starts developing in the top layer of cells called the ectoderm. The skin, hair, nails and sweat glands will also develop out of this layer of cells. The lungs, intestines, thyroid and pancreas also develop from a third layer of cells called the endoderm.

Thought I'd start this to keep everyone up to-date as to what's going on in our lives...

Figure I'd start off with a couple of signs, or stories if you want to call it that in the past week or so.

The other day Pete printed out an article about a women who was 9 months pregnant, she was murdered but someone cut the baby out of her. I then proceeded to say something to Dolores about the placenta article I read in the Time Magazine...in which Pete responded "Geez Heather, are you getting ready for your twin babies you're going to have?!"

On Friday, Able always comments on my stomach about how flat it is...And I usually proceed to stick it out and say no, it's not that flat...And then he goes, ohhh, is there a baby in there?

And then today Nellie came to me about something or another, and then asked when I was going to start having kids...Told her hopefully sometime soon - we'll see.
